Running a home business can be a very tough challenge. It can be very difficult to balance your home and business. It can be even more difficult to keep these two things separated, but what are you going to do with your business when it comes time to move?
Moving all of your personal items is a chore, but moving all of your personal items and moving all of your business items at the same exact time is even more of a chore. How in the world can you manage to do them both and keep your sanity? Here are some tips that will make moving your home office so much easier.
Organization is the key
If you are running a business from your home, then you most likely have quite a large collection of paper based documents. You will have all of your licensing information and probably much more. The Internal Revenue Service will require you to keep certain important tax documents on file for several years at a time. Hopefully you have all of these documents nicely organized. If you don’t, then you have a chore ahead of you.
You may find out that you have been keeping a lot of paper documents that you no longer need. Take the time to go through all of your documents and figure out which ones you no longer need. You may be holding on to a lot of stuff that you no longer need. The less stuff that you have to move, the easier it will be to do it.
Backup before you move
Computers are everywhere, and chances are you have a lot of your business information on your computer system or systems. Before you move anything, make sure that you do a full and complete backup. Keep your backup and your computer in two separate places. A complete backup will protect you if something happens to your computer. You will thank yourself later.
What about all of those wires
Most home offices have a rat’s nest of wires behind the desk. Some of these wires can easily be broken, and it can be a challenge to get them all organized. This is just one of the many jobs of moving a home office.
As you unplug everything, label each cable if they are not already labeled. Once again, you will thank yourself when it comes time to set everything back up. You would have made yourself a nice little road map that will make putting everything back where it belongs very simple.
Your electronics are fragile
That brings us to the last tip, packing all of your important electronics. Most of your office electronics are fragile. You may have multiple computers, printers, scanners and other types of equipment. These things were made to sit on top of a desk. They were not made to be moved around, bumped or dropped. Take extra care with all of your office electronics, and you will not have any problems.
Moving your home office is easy, but if you don’t follow some of these tips, you will find that it is quite a challenge.
